How to Transform your First House into a Home

March 15, 2017 at 4:03 pm Diana Smith 1 Tips & Tricks

Decorating your first home can be stressful. If you are new to the whole organizing and decorating process, you might have difficulties finding the right colors, furniture, accessories and many other elements. However, there are few tips and tricks that can help you decide which decorating pieces you need in your new home.

Find a Focal Point

To best determine the focal point of any room, you should look for its emphasized features – elements that naturally draw your eyes towards them. Many rooms already have built in focal points, such as a large window with a beautiful view, or a fireplace. However, if your living room doesn’t have any of these, you can easily create your own. One way to create the focal point is according to the room’s purpose. For example, if you plan on using a certain room for reading, you can make the bookshelf its focal point. Also, you can use accent walls as center of attention: paint one of the walls into a different, contrasting color and decorate it with artwork or shelves. Additionally, you can use larger pieces of furniture, such as a fancy bold-colored sofa.

The Rule of Odd Numbers

This rule is based on grouping objects and details in odd numbers. This way, the objects are more appealing, memorable, and they provide a positive visual effect. To achieve this effect, you can use such groups of objects in different heights, textures, and shapes. However, don’t just combine completely different objects; they should have something in common. For example, you can use three vases of different height but made of the same material or painted in similar colors.

Pick the Right Furniture

When decorating your first home, it is essential to pick the furniture that is going to stay there for a long time. The sofa, for instance, is one such piece and it should be a good one. Even if you won’t keep it in the living room forever, it must be made of durable, quality materials, so it can withstand moving to another room or basement. The same goes for your dining table. It is the main element of any dining room, where your family will spend plenty of time, so it should be elegant, but durable. You should also equally invest into finding quality chairs for the dining room. You can pick a slightly different color for a better visual effect, but try to match the material of the chairs to the table. For example, modern bentwood chairs go hand in hand with darker wood dining tables, since they provide a pleasant contrast, but promise comfort and durability for your family.

Measure Everything

In order for everything to be proportional and that you can fit it through the doors, you should always measure the space before shopping. Measure the rooms, doorways, stairs, hallways, and elevator opening if you live in a building that has one. Furniture might seem smaller in big shops, but once you approach the doors, you will see that it is always better to measure first and buy later.

Decorate with Your Memories

Besides paint, furniture, and other accessories, your home needs something personal. In order to make your first home truly yours, you should use framed photos of your memories with friends, family and favorite locations. Arrange several smaller frames on your accent wall, or print larger photographs and make an accent wall entirely of them. Such surroundings will provide a warm atmosphere and contrast to the whole décor, but it will also remind you of the beautiful moments you enjoyed and make your first house your actual home.

Decorating your first home is not an easy job. It requires plenty of organization and patience. Nevertheless, with these few tips you will know where to start and how to elevate any interior design.
