Vintage vs. Modern Interior Designs: Which Works Best?

August 26, 2019 at 2:01 pm Rachel Jones 0 Tips & Tricks

Your choice of interior design determines how functional or aesthetically appealing your home will be. Moreover, a good design makes your living environment healthier and safer, drastically improving the quality of your life. With that in mind, let’s find out which interior style is better: vintage or modern? However, before we do that, first we must understand what each of the two terminologies means.

Vintage

By definition, a vintage style is one that existed or was invented at least 20-30 years ago, but it continues to be exciting and attractive. Think of your childhood home style, 20 years ago, that you are still nostalgic about. That would be a perfect example of vintage décor. However, this does not mean that you need to go back to the 1990s to get the era’s furniture or wall decorations. All you need to do is design artifacts using leather, stones, or wood- whichever material you find attractive. Try to create designs that resemble the genuine vintage from your childhood.

Modern

In the context of interior design, modern means a new, creative, and innovative style that blends contemporary colors, methods, and materials. The unwritten rule of thumb is that they have simple shapes, but their attention to detail is a notch higher compared to vitage styles. Now that we are all on the same page, which factors should guide you when choosing the best décor style for your home?

1. Aesthetic quality

Depending on the purpose of a given room, you should strive to enhance relaxation, functionality, and ambiance. The bedrooms, for example, should be decorated in such a way that they induce good-night sleep for all occupants. The living room, on the other hand, should have a welcoming and exciting appearance. Vintage décor is elegant, cozy, and alluring. It brings an old school vibe that, when used in the living room, it takes your guests down the memory lane. Wrinkled leather chairs in your dining area as well as the dull-colored and unfinished kitchen cabinets, on the other hand, make every meal nostalgic. If you love sophistication, this would be your perfect style.

Modern décor is defined by spacious interiors, polished wood, and dynamic wall art. This style doesn’t auger well with clutter and ornate decorative trinkets. It is simple, entertaining, and more professional looking than vintage décor. If you like to pay very close attention to details, this style will do you justice.

2. Your lifestyle/personality

As we said, modern designs are tailored for spacious interiors. Vintage styles don’t pay much attention to space. If you wish to have a spacious bathroom that has a separate toilet, then a modern style is the way to go. This holds true if you are individualistic and loves to have your private space within your home. Vintage designs, on the other hand, are for those willing to experiment and take risks. If you don’t mind crystal chandeliers and embellished lamps for your living room, then you definitely will love a vintage-styled home.

3. Décor budget

Experimenting with vintage styles could lead to very costly reconstructions if you end up feeling uncomfortable with the form. Also, the sofa designs, paint, lighting, and everything else is a recreation of traditional methods, which makes them a bit expensive. Modern styles are mostly contemporary, so the chances are that you will not need to change anything for years. Plus the fact that almost every designer in your neighborhood understands the modern/prevailing design trends, so their services are a bit cheap.

Final verdict!

If you are decisive, bold, and somehow sophisticated, it would be a good idea to try a vintage design. In case you are a perfectionist who has a thing for meticulous designs, you may not appreciate the uniqueness of old models. Save yourself the trouble and go straight to modern. If need be, you can mix modern and vintage decor to create a unique design for your home.
